The Moments In-between

There have been a couple of times over the past few months that I’ve caught myself thinking about my next adventure, escape, getaway… or even the next time I’d be able to see my family and friends that are currently living in different parts of the world.

When two of my sisters left Italy this summer after an amazing holiday together I thought to myself, after a few sobs, “at least my mom will be here in two weeks”… and when my mom left after a great time together just the other week, my next thought was along the lines of “ok, at least there’s our big Thailand trip in January, I just need to get through these next few months” … And I realized that that style of thinking wasn’t the right way to live – it just wasn’t’ feasible to search for happiness in moments are that actually meant to be highlights in life, because to live that way means that you’re actually missing out on so many little aspects of life in-between.

So, while there’s nothing wrong with loving adventure, exploring new parts of the world,  going on little get-aways, looking forward to spending time with friends and family, the take-away for me was to appreciate the “here & now” and to take time to be happy in the more subtle aspects of life. It’s easy to get stuck in the past, or to focus too much on the future, but I think the key is to be content in the present and accept that right now is exactly where we’re meant to be – and if we are constantly looking elsewhere, these moments will just pass us by.

  2. Awesome! love that you recognized this part “to take time to BE happy” so often as you’ve stated we are looking for this emotion in the event when really its an activity of declaration over our lives. We live and move and have our BEing in him, and the fruit of the spirit is Joy etc..etc… 🙂 I am excited for you as you continue to be happy now 🙂

    • Thanks so much SUPSV. I’m always happy when people can relate to something I’ve written or vice versa … makes you realize that we all deal with so many of the same types of seasons in life. 🙂
